Becoming A Member

In order to be eligible, applicants must:
- be at least 18 years old (16-17 years old for Firefighter-in-Training)
- physically fit and mentally alert
- reside within in the Scranton Fire District, or within an adjoining fire district

A local background check and arson check will be executed upon application.

Commitment

There are certain requirements in order to be considered an active member of the department. Each year, you must attend 6 drills (classroom), 6 trainings (hands-on), 4 company meetings, and complete 36 work hours. In your first year, you must complete a class. If you are a firefighter, you must complete Scene Support (exterior) or FireFighter I (interior). If you are EMS only, you must complete Basic EMT course. As an active member, you must attend 10% of fire calls per year. Training classes and fire equipment is free and provided by the company.
